Prenatal alcohol exposure causes a range of effects that can occur as early as the first few weeks after conception, leading to difficulties with social communication/perception, neurocognitive/executive functions, sensory/motor, and emotional regulation. The identification, diagnosis and treatment of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) can be a complicated process for families and professionals who care for affected individuals. The presenter will discuss the current DSM-5 diagnostic criteria and present a 4-domain treatment planning model for children, adolescents and adults with Neurodevelopmental Disorder associated with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure (ND-PAE). While these conditions are lifelong and irreversible, neuroplasticity of the brain and nervous system holds promise for improved functioning for adults. Reducing stress, improving resiliency, strengthening adaptive functions, and preventing alcohol/tobacco/other drug use in this population are key ingredients for improved outcomes.
